B44 Review

B44 was pretty decent. It's located in an well decorated alleyway in the financial district packed with half a dozen restaurants. I've never been to that alley before, but it's a cute place. But even on the Thursday on which we went most restaurants there were packed, and I mean packed (because the tables are very close together).

We started with an assortment of appetizers: squid stuffed with sausage and cooked in its own ink, ox tail, sauteed tiger shrimp, an odd salad made mostly from tuna sliced so thin it was almost like ham, and an assortment of spanish cheeses. The squid was interesting but not particularly good. The tiger shrimp was excellent and one of the stars of the meal. Most of the cheeses were quite good and the blue cheese was truly great and another star.

For the main courses, we had the b44 paella (standard paella), the paella barcelona (standard paella but no chicken or sausage, just seafood and shellfish), and a dish of assorted seafoods and shellfishes in a romesco sauce. These were all pretty good but none was a standout. The only item that desires special attention here was the monkfish; it was part of each of these dishes and it was always excellent.

The desserts were mediocre: an chocolate flan and a creme brulee (including slightly warm custard, which is very wrong).

Original Announcement

I'm in the mood for paella (and other Spanish cuisine), so I'm heading to B44 this Thursday at 8:30pm.
