Crossing The Bar Review

Since many people couldn't make it last week, Seth and I realized that the restaurant choices didn't have to remain restricted to good-for-groups. So at the last minute we changed the venue to Crossing The Bar, a French-Indian restaurant on Pier 33.

I was hesitant when Seth suggested it; there weren't many reviews of it and most were mediocre. Many said the place was eerily empty. But in the end we decided it could hurt to try it, so we went.

And indeed the place was eerily empty (with less than a dozen people). It had one of those decors that, with enough pretty people, it would be a cool place. We wondered how it could survive as a business; I think it might by renting itself out as a club at night.

But back to the food. It was better than I expected. Not great, and not really French or Indian, but good nonetheless. We had an appetizer of Masala Crab Crepes, which were quite good (though lacked the masala connection). Entrees were Kashmiri Curried Lamb, which turned out to be similar to the lamb chunks one would find in a thick dark stew, and Paneer Tikka Masala, which turned out to be chunks of fried paneer (cheese) and red bell pepper strips in a heavy cast iron pan (the kind one frequently sees fajitas served in) with a dark tasty sauce I'd estimate was a mix of pureed portobellos mushrooms and some form of chile pepper. In short, I don't know where they get the names of the food from but the items are still pretty decent.

Original Announcement

Since Crossing The Bar was the result of a last minute change of venue, there was no original announcement.
