Ikeda's Commentary
Coming out of Sweetpeas, I saw a big sign across the highway that said PIES. Having a hunch this was Ikeda's, a grocery/market/cafe that was famous for pies and had a store or two somewhere along the I-80 corridor between SF and Tahoe, I decided to investigate further. And indeed it was Ikeda's!
Although I didn't purchase anything, I was impressed by the class of items Ikeda's sells. In addition to the usual vegetables, cereals, etc., it carries an amazingly wide assortment of dressings, sauces, salsas, and jams. More variety than any of my local grocery stores, and Ikeda's is only a fraction of their size!
Ikeda's pie selection includes apple, blueberry, raspberry, marionberry, "razzleberry" (raspberry and marionberry), and strawberry-rhubarb; most of these come both as regular pies or cobblers. I've tried a few of them before and they've always been at least decent. I'd be happy to systematically try them all. The one I happen to eat the most is marionberry, because I had a friend that picks one up every time he drives by, and although it is a bit too sweet for my tastes, it is still good enough that I'm happy to have a slice.
Incidentally, they also carry a number of (expensive) wines.
Original Announcement
Since this was a destination I chose while on the way to Tahoe, there was no original announcement.
