Note
We visited Steps of Rome Caffe twice, once on 2006-07-05 and once on 2009-04-08.
Eschewing dessert at The House in favor of exploring North Beach and seeing what our options were, we wandered a bit and selected the Steps of Rome cafe ( http://www.stepsofrome.com/caffe/ ). The ambiance is odd; with energetic music and three large-screen TVs on the wall (two turned to separate sports stations, one to MTV), it felt "like the cafe equivalent of a bar." The lighting and furniture (with colorful chairs and glass-topped small circular wooden tables displaying photographs), however, reflected its coffeehouse status. We didn't enjoy the busy-ness/agitation/noise.
We were surprised to find we enjoyed our food. Our lattes were pretty good, as was our chocolate-crusted cheesecake, nicely light.

After dinner, recalling that we previously visited a cafe in the area that liked, we looked up the name (Steps of Rome) and headed there. Although the atmosphere was still the same, the food and drinks wasn't as good. The coffee was average or below average, and the cheesecake we got this time was merely decent. Quite different than our last cheesecake, this one was dense and very cream-cheese-y.
